The Best Generative AI Tools Transforming Education
2 April 2024
Whether you’re a schoolteacher or university student, a workplace upskiller or a lifelong learner, there are generative AI tools you can use to make education more accessible, efficient and affordable.
Generative AI is great for structuring and communicating information in ways that make it easy to understand and absorb as well as providing answers it can be used to generate interactive learning experiences such as chatbots that can bring learning to life, or even roleplay as historical characters.
On top of this, many of the online learning platforms are swiftly adding generative AI functionality in order to create personalized learning experiences and streamline the process of course creation.
So here’s a look at some of the best tools I’ve come across that are tailored for use by learners and educators.
My Favorite Generative AI Education Tools
Duolingo Max
Duolingo is one of the world's most popular language-learning platforms and was also one of the first online educational tools to leverage generative AI. In fact, it was one of the earliest platforms to partner with OpenAI and debut its GPT-4 large language model.
Last year it launched its Duo Lingo Max service, which offers personalized learning, automated feedback on speech and grammar exercises, and real-time tips on how the student is progressing.
It also allows students to roleplay with AI-powered personas in order to carry out learning-focused tasks. An example is a real-time chat with an AI waiter in a Parisian café, who they can use to practice ordering drinks and making conversation.
Duolingo is a pioneer in the field of learning-based AI and thanks to its close partnership with OpenAI is has plans to roll the transformative technology out across many other features.
Fetchy
Fetchy positions itself as a “virtual assistant for educators”, and is comprised of a suite of more than 40 tools that can help teachers to create lessons, plan projects and build teaching frameworks.
Starting from a teacher-centric perspective, its creators identified tasks that educators carry out every day, with the aim of freeing up more time that can then be spent with students. Teachers can chat to it to get advice and insights on common classroom challenges such as motivating students or tackling challenging behavior, as well as use it to automate administrative tasks like creating letters and permission slips.
Course Hero
The learning platform Course Hero offers a new tool called Learn This Document that lets students upload study materials on any subject and receive AI-powered insights, explanations and learning aids. It can even create instant quizzes that students can use to test their knowledge on any subject or learning material. Course Hero also offers an AI Academy course specially tailored to the needs of teachers, tutors and educators who want to learn how to use AI to improve learning.
Coursera Coach
Coursera was founded by AI pioneer Andrew Ng, who is also a former head of AI at Google, so it comes as no surprise that AI is built into its core. The platform recently introduced a service called Coach, which acts as an AI tutor to provide personalized feedback as well as automated summaries of course materials and lectures.
It has also launched a plugin for ChatGPT that allows the world’s most popular AI chatbot to be used to browse and choose from its vast range of courses and specializations. It aims to act in the same way as an academic counselor, by understanding a student’s learning goals and requirements and guiding them towards the most relevant recommendations.
Consensus
Consensus is best thought of as a generative AI-powered academic search engine. Ask it an academic question, and rather than the "best guess" type answer you'll get from ChatGPT or the webpage-based results of a traditional search engine, you get answers taken from published peer-reviewed studies and papers. As well as a natural-language answer, you will also see the results of the “consensus meter” that attempts to quantify how opinions may be split or complex or contentious issues, and a list of links to the research materials that were used to generate the answer, to help with verification or further reading.
