The Innovative Future Tech At Goodwood Festival Of Speed 2024

5 August 2024

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is renowned for showcasing the fastest and most impressive cars from the past and present. But tucked away in the Future Lab, visitors got a tantalizing look at the technologies that may reshape how we move people and goods in the coming decades. From autonomous drones to electric vertical takeoff vehicles, the innovations on display paint a picture of a cleaner, more efficient transportation future.

This year’s theme, “Technology for a Better World,” was showcased through four dynamic zones: Protecting the Planet, Robots to the Rescue, Future of Flight, and Our World in Pixels. Each area presented cutting-edge innovations aimed at transforming industries and our daily lives.

The Innovative Future Tech At Goodwood Festival Of Speed 2024 | Bernard Marr

Protecting The Planet

Environmental sustainability was a major focus at Future Lab, featuring revolutionary solutions aimed at preserving our planet. Privateer is leading space sustainability efforts with its satellite sharing economy, utilizing the real-time Wayfinder platform for navigating crowded orbits and the TerraScope AI modeling for enhanced Earth observations. Astroscale is addressing space debris by developing technologies to reduce orbital clutter and promote a circular economy in space. On the ground, Durham University Solar Car showcased the potential of solar energy with their record-setting DUSC2023 vehicle. The Tyre Collective tackled microplastic pollution from tyre wear by capturing pollutants at the source. Levidian made significant strides in carbon capture with its LOOP technology, converting methane gas into hydrogen and graphene.

One of the most intriguing concepts came from Helixx, a company reimagining urban logistics from the ground up. CEO Steve Pegg explained their vision of micro-factories producing simplified electric delivery vehicles right in the heart of mega-cities:

"We've almost reinvented what is inside of our factories and how our factories operate. Our factories are very lean and they run on a very low OPEX methodology. But in order to do that, the components that are coming in are designed very differently. You don't need to be a chef to learn how to put McDonald's burgers together. And it's the same, you don't need to know how to build a vehicle to put a Helixx together."

Rather than selling vehicles outright, Helixx plans to offer them on a subscription basis, lowering the barrier to entry for delivery drivers. It's a model that could dramatically increase the number of electric vehicles on city streets while reducing logistics costs.

Robots To The Rescue

The robotics revolution was prominently featured, highlighting advancements in AI, machine learning, and automation. HausBots demonstrated innovative robotic platforms designed for inspection and maintenance, removing humans from dangerous environments. Sheffield Robotics highlighted their commitment to educational and companion robotics, promoting human-robot collaboration. Shadow Robot unveiled advanced robot hands in collaboration with Google DeepMind, aiming to revolutionize workflows with precision and efficiency.

The Future Lab also featured robots aimed at making agriculture and logistics more efficient and sustainable. Earth Rover demonstrated its autonomous weeding robot, which uses AI and concentrated light pulses to eliminate weeds without chemicals or soil disturbance. James Miller, CEO of Earth Rover, explained their innovative approach: "We use AI to identify the weeds on the ground next to the crop. We obviously protect the crop and so we don't shoot at those, but then we use a small pulse of concentrated light to zap the weed and effectively kill the weed." This technology not only eliminates the need for herbicides but also provides valuable crop monitoring data to farmers.

Meanwhile, Dexory showed off its warehouse automation solution combining autonomous robots, data capture, and digital twin technology. Marketing Director Jackie Bibby explained: "The robot itself will scan the warehouse, the barcodes off of the pallets, through an entire warehouse and then it will transmit real-time to the digital twin. Then you have visualization of the stock accuracy, the space efficiency, et cetera."

Future Of Flight

The Future of Flight zone featured groundbreaking unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and advanced aircraft designs. The Drone Rules emphasized their role in drone operations and STEM education, showcasing the benefits of drone technology. Royal Mail displayed their trials of drone technologies for remote deliveries, enhancing reliability, speed, and environmental impact. Sees.ai is developing an operating system for UAVs to deliver aerial intelligence at scale, crucial for inspecting critical infrastructure. Hybrid Air Vehicles showcased the Airlander 10, a zero-emission aircraft designed for cargo and passenger transport.

Several exhibitors showcased how autonomous drones are poised to transform delivery and logistics. Dronamics unveiled its impressive "Black Swan" cargo drone, capable of carrying 350kg payloads up to 2,500km. As Chief Revenue Officer Gavin Gomes explained: "We're the world's first drone airline. It's a terrific proposition – same-day delivery for everyone, everywhere on the planet." While regulatory hurdles remain, Gomes believes cargo drones will pave the way for broader acceptance of unmanned aircraft.

Windracers demonstrated that drone deliveries aren't just a future possibility but a present reality. CEO Simon Muderack detailed how their robust fixed-wing drones are already conducting mail and medical deliveries in the UK: "This is a reality today. This platform behind us first flew in 2019, and we've already proven that we can deliver day-in, day-out operations. This aircraft can fly a thousand kilometers, carry a hundred kilogram plus payload and do that in most weather conditions that nature can throw at us."

For those seeking a more personal flying experience, Volare Aviation showcased the Lilium Jet, an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Cliff Lee-Fatt, Head of Commercial Operations, highlighted its potential to replace noisy, polluting helicopters:

"When it's running, it's 60 decibels of noise. So if you think a commercial air conditioning unit, that's about as silent as this'll be. We think it'll be a door opener for sites that typically close early due to noise pollution in London." With a range of 150 nautical miles and seating for four passengers plus a pilot, the Lilium Jet could revolutionize urban and regional air mobility as soon as 2026.

Our World In Pixels

Advancements in spatial computing, AI, and real-time processing were showcased in the Our World in Pixels zone. GeoAcoustics focused on mapping the ocean floor with innovative sensor technologies, vital for environmental conservation and resource management. Metaverse VR is transforming skills and experiential training with award-winning immersive content solutions in VR. Miirage showcased their high-definition holographic technology, turning ordinary spaces into extraordinary digital worlds. Performit Live introduced real-time motion capture streaming, democratizing engagement with live content using advanced motion capture technology.

Atlantic Productions highlighted their award-winning immersive storytelling in VR, including collaborations with David Attenborough and NASA. I had the opportunity to try out immersive documentaries using the Apple Vision Pro glasses. The content produced for Apple TV+ allowed me to experience the thrill of extreme sports from a first-person perspective. In particular, I was able to immerse myself in the world of adventure like never before with the "Highlining" episode. This groundbreaking immersive video transported me alongside pioneering athlete Faith Dickey as she faced an extraordinary challenge: a daring highline traverse 3,000 feet above Norway's breathtaking fjords. The hyper-realistic visuals and spatial audio created an unparalleled sense of presence, making me feel as if I was right there on the line, experiencing the adrenaline rush and breathtaking views. This technology demonstrates the potential for immersive media to revolutionize how we experience and engage with documentaries and adventure content.

The Future Lab at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024 was a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of a better future. From sustainable space exploration to revolutionary robotics and next-gen flight technologies, the innovations on display promise to reshape our world for the better. The festival not only celebrated automotive excellence but also ignited a vision of a technologically advanced and sustainable future.
